American School and University Recognizes Two MCA Projects!

By Olivia Jacobson-McKelvie, Associate Principal

As part of the 2021 Architectural Portfolio awards presented by American School & University (AS&U) Magazine, MCA’s renovation of Howard Hall and the Academic Commons at Howard Community College has been recognized as an Outstanding Design in Post-Secondary Schools.  The previous two structures (the Nursing and Science & Technology buildings) were taken down to their structure and completely rebuilt to provide state-of-the art teaching, student services, and administrative space. As the architect of record for this 100,000 square foot project, we are thankful to AS&U for the recognition in this year’s Architectural Portfolio. We are also honored to be able to provide a new home for the studies of hospitality, culinary, social sciences, criminal justice, and education at Howard Community College since.

As a second recognition in the 2021 Architectural Portfolio awards presented by American School & University (AS&U) Magazine, MCA’s renovation of Roj Student Center at McDaniel College has also been recognized as an Outstanding Design in Post-Secondary Schools. Originally built in 1978, the updated 40,000 SF center provides a new fast-casual dining center, flexible workspaces and meeting rooms, an innovation lab, a student lounge and recreation area, offices for various campus organizations (including the Center for Experience and Opportunity as well the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and multiple outdoor terraces. As the Architect of Record that worked earnestly to help McDaniel to open this student center at the beginning of the 2020 school year, MCA is thankful to AS&U for this additional recognition in this year’s Architectural Portfolio.

Over the past 30 years, MCA has successfully delivered more than 900 higher education projects spanning every sector of campus, and we look forward to supporting the creation and renovation of more institutional projects in the future!
