By Stephen Bates, AIA, NCARB, President

Please join us in celebrating MCA’s multiple promotions to Principal! MCA’s Board of Directors is very pleased to announce the elevation of three highly qualified team members to the role of Principal earlier this year. Kim Kavanagh (AIA, LEED AP) and Frank Rosato (AIA) both have a deep healthcare design and planning experience background, leading projects for major healthcare clients across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, and are charged with continuing to enhance the quality of our healthcare design while continuing to expand this growing area of our practice.  Utku Akbulut (AIA, LEED AP) has applied his talents across multiple sectors, particularly including Behavioral Health and Higher Education. A talented designer and design manager, Utku is also one of our leaders in the application of Information Technology across our practice.

A well-rounded healthcare planner, and design manager, Kimberly says her passion lies in behavioral health design. With every project, she strives to utilize LEAN design principles, sustainable practices and materials, and evidenced-based and biophilic methodologies to create therapeutic spaces that promote wellness. With both her clients and colleagues, Kimberly establishes a collaborative team environment that promotes idea sharing—including creative, out-of-the-box solutions for resolving unique project challenges.

Frank has completed many acute healthcare care projects covering all aspects of healthcare design, including over 10 Emergency Department and Freestanding Emergency Department projects. Based out of our Richmond office, he is an expert in the multiple codes related to the design and operation of healthcare facilities and has dedicated much of his career to Life Safety in Healthcare having completed over 50 Life and Fire Safety assessments of hospitals. He leads our practice through participation on our Standards Committee and Education & Training.

Utku has cross sector experience in multiple areas of the profession and made a special impact in our academic and healthcare sectors. His responsibilities range from master planning to the design and design management of projects from inception to completion. A highly talented designer, Utku is passionate about design excellence, and his strong design skills are reflected in various projects both in and outside the United States.
