Halfway up the coast of Maine is a scenic wonderland that draws international visitors. Not only is Acadia National Park home to the tallest peak on our Atlantic coast—offering up the first sunrise in America each day—it is also a draw for students across the pond seeking seasonal employment in a spectacular locale through the ExplorUS National Parks program.
The Jordan Pond House in Acadia encompasses a restaurant, three retail shops, and a 60-bed dormitory for seasonal staff residing on-site. Originally constructed in the 1960s, today the National Park Service refers to their staff accommodations as “rustic” and are seeking to make improvements.
MCA traveled to Bar Harbor, Maine to assist design teammate Facility Engineering Associates, P.C. (FEA) with this Capital Facilities Improvement Project. Our team worked to provide three unique renovation/addition programming options for the National Park Service to consider and determine best value as it moves toward design; these included options at separate price points and to accommodate evolving programming.
MCA has been working as team architect with Facility Engineering Associates, P.C. (FEA) since 2019 and in that time has provided scoping assessments, and more, for over 30 parks.
