Under the wide, open skies of southern Montana is a monolith emerging from the grasslands. It stands on the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commemorating the epic battle between the Lakota and Plains Indians and the United States Army on these plains 150 years ago.
MCA recently traveled to Little Bighorn National Monument to assist the National Park Service (NPS) with programming and preliminary scope planning for capital improvements. MCA worked with NPS to improve the visitor experience while enhancing the NPS staff’s ability to interpret, protect and preserve this important cultural and historical site.
Work included assessing existing facilities and developing space programs and programmatic layouts for a proposed Curatorial Work and Storage Facility and new Visitor Center and Museum. Our team met with Park stakeholders—from the Park Curator and Education Director to the Park Superintendent and Law Enforcement leadership teams—to discuss the programmatic elements needed for these new spaces and to generate a detailed report that included existing conditions assessment and analysis, programming requirements, preliminary scope layouts, and projected costs associated with these new buildings.
We continue to visit and assess many of the National Park facilities and Monuments throughout the NPS Pacific West, Intermountain and Alaska Regions of United States through this contract with FEA.
