MCA provided architectural design and construction administration services for the renovation of a 75,000 SF, 340-bed, 7-story residence hall that was originally constructed in 1965. The mechanical/electrical scope of work consisted of a complete HVAC system replacement, complete re-wiring of resident floors, and total building automation system replacement. The significant challenge for the project was that the entire construction phase had to occur during the eleven-week summer break, and the building was to be completely ready for residents to occupy at the beginning of the fall semester.

Marshall Craft Associates supported the MEP prime consultant on this project and was responsible for architecture and interior design. The scope included replacement of interior finishes, renovations to public spaces, the addition of handicapped accessible facilities and enhancement of resident ‘Social Lounges’ on each dormitory floor of the high-rise building. Interior upgrades in highly visible public areas such as the Main Lobby and multi-purpose Formal Lounge were driven by American University’s design initiative to overhaul dated dorm interiors and provide a clean, contemporary look that is also highly functional and easy to maintain.
