West Wing Renovation

BALTIMORE MUSEUM OF ART | Baltimore, MD

The West Wing and Northwest Cone Buildings, which house the BMA’s contemporary collection, were renovated as the first phase of a comprehensive museum program. This project involved flexible new gallery lighting systems, skylight replacements and new finishes in the galleries, all aimed at improving the visitor experience while assisting the Museum with meeting specific contractual agreements with artists. In some cases, MCA worked directly with the artists, including coordinating the building design to accommodate installations that were highly integrated into the fabric of the building structure and architecture. The black box media gallery was relocated and re-engineered to accommodate the latest film & digital technology. Building infrastructure and roofing replacements also comprised the remainder of the project scope.

Project Highlights

  • Utilized protective glass and adjustable louvers and screens to limit and direct light coming in as appropriate for each exhibit to protect collections
  • Published and enforced a rigid schedule for roofing work detailing requirements for dust control and finish protection protocols to protect artwork during renovation
  • MCA worked directly with artists to ensure compliance
