Positron Facility

JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL | Baltimore, MD

MCA designed a new Positron Laboratory to meet JHH research and clinical treatment needs. The project involved reorganizing existing space and incorporating new equipment to support a safe and efficient workflow. The lab meets USP 797 Guidelines for infusible compounds and houses two new series of hot cells to support an existing cyclotron. The hot cells are used to produce elements for human treatment as well as for animal research.

Project Highlights

  • Only 50% of the designated space was slab on grade and could physically accommodate the equipment requirements for the hot cells. The other half was above a sub-basement and existing loading dock. We removed the entire slab on grade and arranged the new hot cells in a linear processing mode with all hot cells for developmental studies on one side and all hot cells for human studies on the opposite side in a separate linear flow.
  • By building up a 20” thick slab to support the weight of the hot cells, MCA also provided radioactive shielding as the isotopes move between the cyclotron and the hot cells.
  • Meets USP 797 Guidelines for “dosing room”
  • Detailed planning of HVAC system distribution resolved the basement’s restricted ceiling heights and lab’s location at the end of the existing mechanical system runs.
