Founded in 1853 by visionary Moses Sheppard and significantly endowed in 1896 by philanthropist Enoch Pratt, the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital revolutionized treatment of the mentally ill by providing compassionate care to children, adolescents, adults and older adults in a variety of healing settings. More than 150 years later, the Sheppard Pratt Health System (SPHS), a private, non-profit health organization, continues that legacy as one of the nations largest provider of mental health, special education, and substance abuse services. Headquartered in Towson, Maryland, SPHS has consistently ranked in the nation’s top-ten psychiatric hospitals for the last 30 years. SPHS provides behavioral health services for individuals, families and organizations, including full or partial hospitalization, residential treatment or respite, special education, psychiatric rehabilitation, general hospital services, and outpatient programming.

For over 25 years, MCA has provided SPHS a range of planning, architectural, interior design and facilities solutions services. Considered their “in-house” architect, MCA is an integral member of the SPHS family, working collaboratively on projects at their facilities statewide. SPHS appreciates MCA’s institutional knowledge, technical expertise and innovative approaches to designing behavioral health environments. Project types includes inpatient, outpatient, residential, transitional, education, recreation/fitness and therapeutic settings. We support SPHS’s treatment of the whole person with individualized, compassionate, comprehensive care, through built environments that enable healing and encourage a full recovery.
