The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt

Sheppard Pratt | Baltimore, Maryland

The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt provides residential psychiatric rehabilitation to people experiencing behavioral health issues, including depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. The goal of the environment is to make you feel comfortable and secure during treatment for a behavioral health concern. The Retreat’s unlocked campus has private suites comfortable common areas and access to extensive walking trails.  The renovation project expanded the program from 16 to 22 private residential suites specifically designed to feel like home, added individual and group therapy rooms, and a dining room with a serving kitchen.

The expanded space not only improves access to experienced psychiatrists and mental health professionals and their ability to provide personalized care, it also allows for more interaction among the residents who take comfort in the realization that they are not alone in their struggle.  Above all, it is the creation of an environment that is a “refuge from the storm”, evoking the feeling of comfort and security in the environment that allows patients to proceed down the path of health and healing.

Innovative design solutions were required to adapt the 1800s building to a state of the art facility. Adaptations include the incorporation of private bathrooms within each residential suite, compliance with accessibility requirements, the enhancement of HVAC systems, the conversion to LED lighting, and the preservation of historic features such as Tiffany stained glass. The interior design (lighting, finishes, furniture, etc.),  contribute to the mental well-being that fosters healthy living.
