In-Patient Unit Renovation

UPMC Pinnacle Health Hanover Hospital | Hanover, PA

Hanover Hospital is undergoing a multi-phased process to expand and improve their inpatient facilities. MCA designed a new 24-bed medical/surgical unit as part of a vertical expansion master plan increase. The capacity allowed for the renovation of older inpatient units on three floors. MCA led a Lean-infused design process that involved 40 hospital employees from all departments impacted by the proposed changes to eliminate waste from the patient care process and to improve patient safety and comfort.

Project Highlights

  • Decentralized nurse work stations and ample storage outside each patient room keep nurses near patients
  • Glass-walled central care hubs contain conversations and patient rooms recessed of corridor provide sound buffer
  • Elements of biophilic design were integrated throughout
  • A patient "terrace" room with view of nature was placed at one end of the unit
