This project focused on flexibility, patient safety, staff efficiency, quality of patient care, and family support. The space expansion enabled the hospital to separate medical and surgical patients, which also allowed for greater infection control and more specialized nursing competencies. A central support core was supplemented by decentralized medical stations, to minimize the number of steps required by staff and maximize patient safety. The project also included the conversion of two existing floors of patient beds from semi-private rooms to private rooms.

• Developed new "zoned semi-private room" model that combined virtues of private and semi-private rooms to improve infection control, patient accessibility and operational efficiency

• Used angled shape to open up unit core and provide greater visibility to patient rooms

• The addition is connected to the existing hospital with two corridors that can be pressurized to create isolation
