Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL CENTER | Baltimore, MD

With the new NICU, UMMC identified measurable Critical Success Targets in support of their goal to improve care for the hospital’s youngest and most vulnerable patents. MCA led an intensive LEAN design process, with site visits to other large academic NICUs, and multiple mock-ups to help UMMC’s stakeholders make decisions that will best support their operational improvements.

Project Highlights

  • 36,000 square foot, with 52 private beds
  • Multi-discipline Visioning Group used Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Evidence-based Design (EBD) concepts to identify key Guiding Principles and Critical Success Factors.
  • Elements of the evidence-based research was implemented
  • Using acoustical systems, materials and finishes, to meet stringent recommendations for decibel levels within the patient room
  • Individually programmed lighting controls at each patient room, to provide lighting cycles that harmonize with the infant’s natural circadian rhythm.
  • Integration of Biophilic Design elements through forms, finishes, and artwork, in order to reduce family and staff stress.
